Day 3:Tartan Problem

1. State the problem.

A big problem at Tartan is the issue of texting on cellular devices during school. Because of this, students are paying less attention to their teachers, and more attention to their friends.

2. Give evidence.

Students' phones are being taken away more often. Tartan has recently made consequences for in-school cell phone use, involving:

1st time offense: phone is held until end of day
2nd time offense: phone is held until parent comes to pick it up
3rd time offense: phone is held until end of school year

These rules show the increasing problem of cell phone use during school.

3. Examine contributing factors.

It is possible that students are talking to friends in different classes, because they did not have enough time during passing time to converse with their buddies. Also, students may not be paying attention to their teachers because they may feel that what their teachers are talking about is insignificant, and so therefore, they can tune out.

4. Propose a solution.

-Passing time could be lengthened to 8 minutes.
-Teachers could provide more hands-on activities that would require students to pay more attention to complete the task.
-Teachers could try to stay more on-topic to what needs to be learned that day, so that students stay tuned-in more.
-More interesting curriculum could be taught, so that students would want to listen.
-Cell phones could be allowed in the halls, but prohibited from the classroom. This would give students time to talk to friends from other schools, but would still enable learning in class.
